How solar works here

How rooftop solar works in Singapore

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so the sun crosses high overhead all year. According to EMA, the country receives an average of 1,580 kWh of solar energy per square metre each year, and it has already reached its 2030 target of 2 gigawatt-peak of solar, with the target now raised to 3 GWp.

Panels on your roof turn sunlight into direct current. An inverter converts it into the alternating current your home or building uses. Your own appliances take the solar power first; whatever you do not use at that moment flows out to the grid and earns a credit, and the grid supplies you whenever the panels are not covering your demand, such as at night.

You stay connected to SP Group the whole time, so there is no change to how reliable your supply is, and no battery is needed.

EMA rules

Approvals and rules for solar in Singapore

EMA does not license solar installers as such. What it requires is that the right licensed professionals design, approve and switch on your system. We bring all of them.

A Qualified Person signs off

A registered architect or professional engineer oversees the design and installation and obtains the permits your project needs, which can include BCA (structure), URA (planning) and SCDF (fire safety).

A Licensed Electrical Worker

An LEW commissions and turns on the system and applies for the electrical licences, so it is connected to the grid safely and legally.

Larger systems

Systems of 1 MWac and above may also need a Generation Licence from EMA and registration with the Energy Market Company. We tell you at feasibility stage if this applies.

Selling surplus solar

Get credited for the solar you export

If you buy electricity from SP Group, the solar you export is credited to your monthly bill under SP Group's Simplified Credit Treatment. According to EMA, you are paid the prevailing regulated tariff minus grid charges, and the rate is reviewed every quarter. Because it changes, we do not quote a fixed export rate; your estimate states the rate it assumes.

If you buy from an electricity retailer, exports are paid under the Enhanced Central Intermediary Scheme at wholesale prices instead. Our LEW registers your system under the right scheme as part of commissioning. Using your solar yourself is generally worth more than exporting it, which is why sizing to your daytime use matters.

Pricing

What solar costs, and what affects the price

Landed homes

From S$1,500 per kWp

Typical systems run from 10.8 kWp to 20.25 kWp, sized to your roof and your usage. You get a fixed, written price after a site survey.

Installation scope and eligibility vary with site conditions and regulatory requirements. Regulatory fees are borne by the client.

See landed solar sizes and pricing

EMA puts typical upfront costs at S$1,000 to S$1,600 per kilowatt-peak, with maintenance of about 1% to 2% of the system cost a year. On payback, EMA says most consumers are likely to break even in about seven years, although those with larger systems and higher electricity usage may see shorter payback periods.

  • System size, and how much usable roof you have
  • Roof type: concrete, metal or tile, and any structural work
  • Cable routes, inverter location and switchboard upgrades
  • Access, scaffolding and working at height
  • Permits your QP needs for your building

Commercial systems are quoted after a feasibility review; see commercial solar pricing.

The process

From roof report to switch-on

  1. 01

    Roof report or call

Start with the free AI roof report, or talk to us on WhatsApp about your property and bills.
  2. 02

    Site survey

We inspect the roof, shading, structure and your electrical supply, then size the system to your use.
  3. 03

    Design and permits

Our Qualified Person finalises the design and obtains the permits your building needs.
  4. 04

    Installation

Mounting, panels, inverter and cabling. For landed homes EMA says this usually takes 1–2 weeks, weather permitting.
  5. 05

    Commissioning and export

Our LEW tests and switches on the system, completes the licences and registers your export scheme.
  6. 06

    Monitoring and care

We monitor performance and keep the system maintained, so it keeps producing for decades.

What you get

One team from design to maintenance

All-black panels

Modern all-black panels for a clean look that suits your home.

Paperwork handled

QP permits, LEW licences and SP Group connection, done for you.

Performance monitoring

Monitoring and maintenance to keep the system performing.

EV-ready

We also install EV chargers, so solar and charging work together.

Maintenance

Keeping your solar system productive

EMA recommends that maintenance covers regular inspection and cleaning, back-end monitoring, electrical safety checks and vegetation management. Dust, bird droppings and leaf litter all cut output, and a fault is easy to miss without someone watching the data.

Read what a visit covers on our solar panel maintenance and cleaning service page.

Every landed system we install includes an annual maintenance programme of two visits a year. Panel cleaning can be added as an option.

FAQ

Solar installation questions

How much does solar panel installation cost in Singapore?

EMA puts typical upfront costs at S$1,000 to S$1,600 per kilowatt-peak (kWp), with yearly maintenance of about 1% to 2% of the system cost. For landed homes, our solar installation starts from S$1,500 per kWp. Your exact price depends on roof size and type, system size and site conditions.

Is solar worth it in Singapore, and what is the payback period?

EMA says "most consumers are likely to break even in about seven years", and that larger systems and higher electricity use can shorten that. EMA also says a system is designed to last at least 30 years, so most of its working life comes after it has paid for itself. Your free roof report gives an estimate for your own roof.

Can I sell excess solar electricity back to the grid?

Yes. If you buy electricity from SP Group, your exported solar is credited to your monthly bill under SP Group's Simplified Credit Treatment, at the regulated tariff minus grid charges. That rate is revised every quarter, so we do not quote a fixed figure. If you buy from an electricity retailer instead, exports are paid under the Enhanced Central Intermediary Scheme at wholesale prices. We register the right scheme for you.

Do I need approval to install solar panels?

Yes, but you do not file it yourself. A Qualified Person (a registered architect or professional engineer) oversees the design and obtains the permits the project needs, which can include BCA for structure, URA for planning and SCDF for fire safety. A Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) then commissions the system, applies for the electrical licences and completes the connection with SP Group. We coordinate all of it.

How long does a solar installation take?

EMA says a landed home installation "usually takes 1-2 weeks, which is also dependent on weather conditions". The survey, design and permits come before that, and we give you a dated schedule once your design is approved.

Can I install solar panels on my HDB flat?

No. HDB rooftops are common property, and HDB installs solar on them under the government's SolarNova programme to power common services. We install solar for landed homes, condominiums (through their MCST) and businesses.

What happens on cloudy days or at night? Do I need a battery?

Panels produce less under heavy cloud or haze and nothing at night. A grid-connected system switches to SP Group power automatically whenever your panels are not covering your use, so the lights never notice. A battery is not required. If you may want one later, we can design the system to be battery-ready.

What maintenance do solar panels need?

EMA recommends regular inspection and cleaning, monitoring of the system's output, electrical safety checks and keeping vegetation clear of the panels. EMA estimates maintenance at about 1% to 2% of the system cost a year. See our maintenance service for what a visit covers.

How can I find out what my roof could generate?

Use our free AI solar roof report. You find your home on a satellite map and outline your roof, and the report estimates the system size, yearly generation and savings for that roof. It is a feasibility estimate, not a quotation; a site visit confirms the details.
